Girls need their daddies. Without the affirmations of a loving father, a young girl will find love in all the wrong places. Mothers must then speak positive declarations over their daughters at all times. Tell her she his beautiful, smart, and sweet. If single mothers are involved with a man, they should spend extra time with their daughters. Public displays of affection with these men around their daughter should be completely taboo. Most teens are sickened by their parent's sexuality and daughters should never be made to feel that a man is the solution to all her problems.
Like sons, daughters need to be involved in sports, music, or whatever they are interested in. They need to be heard and taught that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty. Teach them not to trade goals and dreams for a boy's affections and trite one-liners. She should know she's beautiful and that his interest in her is motivated by something else for now. Confidence in herself will keep her from trading her self-esteem for compliments motivated by selfishness. Make her really believe that she is smart, pretty, and gifted.
If a single mother ever falls into the trap of feeling the need to compete with her daughter on any level, she should get counseling right away.
Love, accountability, and supervision of daughters of single mothers are the antidotes to repeating the pregnant and unwed cycle of behavior. Single mothers can raise physically and emotionally complete women by including solid, successful female role models and plenty of good people from both sexes in their lives. Female role models can be elderly neighbors, church women, club leaders, teachers, and coaches.
